Death & Repatriation

Steps to Take When Someone Dies in Cyprus and Requires Repatriation:

1. Contact the Authorities:

   - If the death occurs at home, immediately inform the local police or ambulance service. A doctor must confirm the death and provide you a medical death certificate.

   - Deaths in hospitals or hospices are typically handled by the staff who will contact the necessary authorities. A doctor must confirm the death and provide you a medical death certificate.

   - Foreign nationals should also notify their embassy and insurance provider and ask for instructions.

2. Register Death and Obtain a Death Certificate:

   - To obtain the death certificate you must visit any District Administration, complete the relevant form, which you can find there, and present the original medical death certificate that you will receive from the hospital/doctor who confirmed the death.

   - A fee of EUR 5 is payable for each certificate. The statutory fee payable if the death is registered after a period of 1 year is EUR 30.

The death certificate is essential for registering the death and organising the funeral. The death is recorded by the Registrar of the district where it occurred.

3. Notify Relevant Organizations:

   - Inform the deceased's employer, banks, insurance companies, and other relevant service providers about the death, to be able to acquire any other documentation if  required.

4. Repatriation Process:

   - Contact a funeral bureau offering repatriation services:

- Repatriation involves returning the body or remains to the home country.

   - Requires Consulate, Medical, and Coroner documentation, as well as travel arrangements and adherence to health regulations.

   - The body must be embalmed and placed in a hermetically sealed metal liner inside the coffin for travel.

   - Human remains can be exported from Cyprus by air with the presentation of the airway bill and authenticated death certificate by the Health Services.

   - Additional documentation, such as Certificate of Causes of Death and Certificate of Transportation of the Dead Abroad, may be necessary in cases requiring autopsy.

   - Some countries may require document translation and Apostille certification.

   - Funeral bureaus can assist with repatriation arrangements, including document authentication and translation if needed.
